There are multiple reasons as to why somebody may need to take a break from the workplace. An example of this may be, maternity / paternity leave. Whatever reason may have caused you to take leave, getting back into the engineering industry can cause dread.

Here are some tips that can help you return back to work after some substantial time off.

Finding the right Engineering job for you:

If you haven’t worked due to redundancy or travelling, you will be looking for a new role. This could vary from a few weeks or months leave, starting your career again can seem tough and scary but were here to help you through it.

Firstly, what kind of engineering role are you looking for? Now is the time to update your CV with skills required for these roles. Try to tailor your CV to each role you are applying for.

Without the right support or information, your process may become increasingly stressful. Consider approaching an engineering recruiter to gain insight into the industry you are returning to. At Perfect Placement we have an ever expanding network for the engineering industry, so get in touch with us as we will be able to help.

Your self-confidence can be damaged, which can affect your performance in interviews whether they are in person or over the phone. Try to rebuild that confidence, this will help you find and approach the application process with an open mind. Identify your strengths and engage with a variety of people in the engineering industry to understand the current demands in the market. If you have the opportunity to attend networking event, do it! This will widen your own network and allow you to speak to potential employers and other professionals.

Your return to your engineering career:

If you have previously left a role due to maternity, paternity or sick leave you are likely to return to your previous workplace after your leave of absence. This may also seem daunting as processes may change and you may feel out of touch.

You have employee rights and it is a legal obligation for an employer to support you in your return to work. This may result in a gradual return to work system with less working hours and a gradual incline in responsibility. You may even be assigned another employee to help with your return process.

Plan ahead where possible, be transparent with your return process and openly discuss your options and opinions with your employer about your transition. Avoid putting pressure on yourself, no one expects you to return with even more knowledge and skill. Focus on the positives, you’re going back to what you are good at, you are maintaining relationships with your team and managing to stay on top of your objectives.

Give yourself time to settle! You are returning to an environment that you haven’t been in for a while, allow yourself to work up more confidence and all will work out well.
