Job seeker advice

It’s that age old saying – and first impressions could definitely not count more than when it comes to starting your new Engineering Job. It is important that you get off to the best possible start with your new team and so here are our Top Tips for ensuring your first days go well and you feel like part of your new company in no time!

Dress the Part

Most companies have a dress code, and this should have been communicated to you throughout the offer process, if for any reason it wasn’t make sure you find out before you start. Looking the part will help you settle in to your new role, it is advised that you take extra care over your attire and appearance during the first few weeks as this will show how keen you are and will give the right impression.

Listen

It is so important that you pay full attention to conversations you are part of. Respond with gestures, questions and remember what’s been said. This will help you build rapport with your new colleagues and if they are telling you about things that are key in your new role you will be more than likely understand and take what they have said on board. This leads in nicely to our next tip…

Remember Names

It isn’t always the easiest thing to do, especially if you are introduced to a lot of people in one go, but when meeting colleagues on a one-to-one basis, don’t be afraid to ask them their names (just try to remember them), if your new company has a meet the team page with pictures, be sure to keep looking at it whilst settling in. A small but significant gesture, it shows that you are making a genuine effort to get to know your new team.

Body Language

This plays a huge part in determining what others think of us. Make sure you appear approachable and open – smile, stand up straight, don’t cross your arms and make eye contact. This will make you come across as approachable and open to conversation.

Ask for Help!

This is SO important – don’t be afraid to ask for help as no one will be expecting you to know everything at the start. It shows a real willingness to learn – but make sure you listen to the response, it becomes quickly frustrating if people are constantly repeating themselves.

Take Notes

There will be lots of information to take on board. Even if you have done this job before, every company does things slightly differently or will have different systems in place. Taking notes is a great way to help you remember and you more quickly feel like you are able to work independently rather than keep on asking questions!

Finally, Be Yourself!

This is perhaps the simplest but most effective tip we will give you.

Without even realising it, the interviewer would have likely thought about how you will fit into the team and here you are, don’t try and be something you aren’t. That gets exhausting very swiftly.
