Essential Things to Consider before you accept an Engineering Job Offer

01-02-2022
Job seeker advice

Receiving a job offer is exciting and in the heat of the moment you might be inclined to accept there and then, without considering some important elements to this job offer.

Whilst it is possible to withdraw your verbal job acceptance, be mindful that a Verbal Acceptance can be seen as a legally enforceable contract even though nothing has yet been put in writing – whilst it is unlikely there will be any comeuppance from this, it could shoot you in the foot later on in your career and will leave the company in the lurch as they will have stopped their Engineering Recruitment Process. Plus, it is an awkward conversation that, quite frankly, no one wants to have.

To avoid finding yourself in this uncomfortable situation, we’ve come up with a Tick List of things for you to consider (and ask) before saying Yes!

Salary and Benefits

It is extremely important to establish what you will be paid prior to accept a job, as once the contract is signed, it is set in stone. Know your worth, research similar roles at companies in the surrounding area to determine the benchmark for pay in your local area. Not only will you be able to establish if the offer is a good one, but you will also be able to use it as leverage if negotiations are needed. If your role is one in which you would potentially attract a performance related bonus, such as a Contracts or Project Manager and sales roles, make sure you find out how this bonus is calculated, whether it is an individual bonus or departmental based.

Hours / Working Schedule

This is very important – you don’t want to be signing your soul away to work every hour under the sun, nor do you want to be on a permanent night shift when this does not suit your family lifestyle. Within roles that are typically Hands-On within the Engineering Sector, such as Maintenance /Service Engineers or CNC Operators, it is common place that you would be working a Shift Pattern, be this a combination of Earlies (or Days) and Lates (or Nights). In addition to shift work, there may be opportunity for overtime, so this is the perfect chance to find out if there is and how much you are paid for it. Don’t forget to ask about your holiday allowance too!

Responsibilities

It is likely that you have a broad understanding of what the job will entail from both the job description and the interview process, but it is always worth finding out what a typical day would look like and what goals or timeframes you are working towards. Be sure to ask for written confirmation of your responsibilities so you can refer back to these at a later date.

Progression and Development

Progressing within your career is very important to most of us, so it is important to ask questions to see what is available with your new Client. The Engineering Sector is very innovative and there are lots of developing technologies being introduced to the market – make sure you find out if you will get the chance to gain knowledge and skills in these innovations. Find out if they offer training courses and what their plan for your career is – don’t be afraid to ask, a good employer will see this as a sign someone wants to be with them for the long haul.

Company Culture

As recruitment specialists, we are seeing that companies are more frequently hiring people who may not have all of the skills required for the role, but have shared morals, beliefs and personality traits with other members of the team.

A company’s culture is made up of several different factors; their values, management style, the companies approach, dress code, structure of teams etc etc. Making sure the environment is one that you can easily fit into and flourish within is essential as it means better job satisfaction, higher productivity and longevity in your career with them.

As Engineering Recruitment Specialists, we will only present a job offer to you that ticks off everything on this list, and if we don’t know the answer, we will find out for you.
