Job seeker advice

Should you be judged on your social media presence? This a regular debate amongst prospective employers, whom may be accessing your accounts before considering you for a role.

Social Media is now such a large part of our lives, it gets easier and easier to discover what a person is like through their online activity.

Let’s take a look at how social media can be jeopardising your future.

According to CareerBuilder’s 2017 survey, which results were dictated by over 2,300 employers and hiring managers, presented that most workers have an online presence and more than half of employer’s WILL NOT employ anyone without an online persona. Some businesses may even had dedicated staff within the HR department whose role is to recruit through social media.

Up to 48% of employers will regularly check your social media accounts even after you’re employed!

With this being said, keep mindful of the information you interact with online. Be aware that employers and/or recruiters are likely to check your online presence before inviting you to an interview. This could vary from a simple Google search or using popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Only you can control what they find, possibly try conducting your own search to identify any changes you need to make.

LinkedIn is a useful tool to create a professional online presence, this is an employability based website that is predominately used to connect with various businesses and employers online. You can use this platform to share your work achievements, company updates, or even any new employability news. This is completely different from other social media sites where you can share your personal accomplishments, such as learning to cut your own hair during the global pandemic! Taking the easy steps to create your profile, highlighting your key skills and experience will make your profile more outstanding towards various employers.

Your privacy settings for social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter are completely your choice! Just remember some key elements of your profile will be seen by future employers, here’s some things to consider.

Do you have content previously posted to your profile that is deemed offensive? Although you are posting your personal opinions on your personal account, could someone find your views / content offensive? Even a post from three years ago could be identified from a potential employer, consider privatising or deleting certain content from the public eye.

If you are able to filter what you post, would you still keep your accounts public? If employers choose to still view your public accounts after you are hired, would you consider privatising your account? If you are publishing content that is subjective or sensitive to your current role, be cautious! This could evidently result in a negative impact to your career or cause hesitation in being invited for an interview by another employer who may view your profile.

Try to find a good medium between your personal and professional life, whilst also showcasing your personality. You are not just your job title, represent yourself well to be able to represent the right company for you!
