Job seeker advice

As a high performing engineering recruitment company, we read through a vast amount of CVs daily. We can provide tips to ensure your CV is easily accessible and relevant to the role you are applying to. Make your CV simple and easy to read, maintaining interest from a recruiter or employer can be difficult.

Here are some of the things you should be avoiding:

  • Don’t Lie! What happens if they ask for evidence? The truth will soon be revealed.
  • Double check your spelling and grammar – spell check is your best friend and will help avoid making simple grammatical mistakes. Double checking and re-reading will soon identify areas that need work. If you have difficulties with spelling and punctuation, ask someone to proof-read your CV for you.
  • There is no need to use long sentences and three adjectives to describe a simple daily objective. Using a mass amount of information can overload the reader, more importantly be distracting from the point you are trying to make. Avoid key information being missed by over explaining.
  • WordArt and fancy fonts won’t be captivating for the recruiter or employer. Majority of CVs are processed through a formatting software which ultimately eliminates any creative attributes on your CV. Avoid wasting your time!
  • Hobbies and Interests should be short and sweet, display a brief overview of your personality rather than a detailed description of your daily routines.
  • Dogfriendly62@... may be your direct email address but it is unprofessional. Create a new email address dedicated to your work and professional communications, this could comprise your name and a number.
  • Adding generic phrases because you just think you should – this could be overused phrases like “I work well under pressure”. Although this may be true, you need to adapt this to be more personal. Try adding in an example of when you have been under pressure and the skill it took to complete the specific task.

Ask yourself: “Is the information I’m adding relevant to the job I want?” and “Will my future employer need to know this?”

Now you know what NOT to do, lets focus on how to write a CV.
