Guidance in Asking for A Promotion

Job seeker advice

If you are looking for progression in your Engineering Career, it is worth seeing what promotion opportunities there are with your current employer.

But, discussing promotions isn’t always easy, unless you are completely confident that you 100% can meet their expectations, but can you guarantee that?

Take into consideration all aspects of the promotion and why you feel deserving. Have you got the skills, reputation of hard work, or time to take on extra responsibilities?

Lack of progression is one of the most common reasons for leaving a company, on the other had replacing those who leave is time consuming and expensive. Typically, employers are open to discussion of improvements, as apposed to finding new staff. This should work to your advantage.

Three things to consider before discussing a promotion:

  1. Does your current work performance reflect that you’re achieving all your targets?
  2. Are you able to clearly converse about your reasoning for a promotion?
  3. Does your work place offer the choice of progression, or require you to partake in further training to achieve the promotion?

Take your time to find the most appropriate approach! If you have just started with this company, it wouldn’t be sensible to ask for a promotion straight away. Nor would it be appropriate if you are currently underperforming and struggling to achieve targets. If you are over-performing or managing objectives easily, it may be the right time to take on more responsibility.

Promotions are performance based progressions, emphasising to your manager and team that you are performing well may work in your favour. Identify yourself as someone who is hardworking, committed to improving, and open-minded to helping others. When conversing with your manager, derive your dedication to the company through examples that highlight all those factors.

Many employees result to waiting for a job opportunity to open before discussing a promotion, as career progression may not be as accessible. As previously stated, career progression is one of the main contributors to leaving a company. Your manager may be unaware of our passion to progress, having a conversation with them about your ambitions may be challenging but could be the most beneficial option.

A variety of outcomes could arise from having this type of conversation with your employer, immediate promotions are unlikely but you are starting the conversation. Patience and persistence is crucial.

Before guarantying a promotion, managers may assign you additional task to test your capabilities. Or just consult you on the possibility of not having available funds to redirect into a pay increase. These are all things to consider, ask yourself what the possibility for rejection is.

If rejected, will it be possible to continue working your current job or is to time to look elsewhere?
