Will A Counter Offer Really Make An Employee Stay?

20-12-2021
Employer advice

Without mentioning the cost of finding a replacement, employers can feel like a failure when an employee decides to leave. If it is a talented, hardworking employee that you don’t want to leave, it is common for managers to present a counter offer.

But, will a counter offer help them decide to stay?

First, find out why they are wanting to leave. This will help determine whether you can persuade them to remain in their current workplace.

These are some of the reasons an employee may leave:

  • They don’t find their job challenging
  • Lack of recognition for achievements
  • Inadequate management
  • Feeling diminished
  • Little to no progression

This information will help your understanding of if the counter offer would be beneficial to the employee. If said employee was leaving due to the lack of progression, how would you construct a new offer? Ultimately, you may not have room for progression but offer more responsibility and an increased salary, but would that be enough?

Did you know that around 80% of employees that receive a counter offer leave within 6 months or 90% will leave around 12 months?!

Counter offers are delaying the inevitable, even by meeting their demands they are still likely to leave…

Let’s focus on how we can avoid talented employees from being tempted to resign in the first place.

Implementing transparent communication between hierarchy and their teams will provide open and honest discussions. Provide a space where employees can address any of their concerns confidently, to stop problems from festering. They should have a positive work culture, that allow issues to be addressed and resolutions to be executed.

How will you factor in salary structures? Allow the topic of salary to come to the surface, and be discussed openly. Consistently reviewing individuals work and rewarding those who go above and beyond. This will help avoid employees to feel undervalued and let their negativity impact their work ethic. Managers should increase their employees’ loyalty by recognizing their commitment, keep them motivated by providing incentives tailored to each employee.
