Becoming An Attractive Employer

Employer advice

The current marketplace is extremely competitive, how is your Engineering business going to stand out from the crowd in comparison to other engineering employers?

During the interview stage, candidates will be assessing you as an employer as well as the business. It is likely that highly experienced Engineers will have arranged multiple interviews as they are in high demand, consider that you are also being judged from the moment they arrive!

We’ve spoken to some of our engineering candidates to provide some constructive feedback on their experience in Interview

Before Interview

  • Make others aware of their arrival, especially if you operate with a reception. This will ease the meet and greet proportion of the interview.
  • Be on time! A 10-minute call that causes a delay could interfere with your businesses reputation.

During Interview

We speak to candidates day in day out, and often the common gripes as to why someone would look to leave a job is as follows:

  • Management techniques.
  • Opportunities for progression / self-development, well lack thereof in their current role.
  • Negative team dynamic, constantly clashing.
  • Successes aren’t rewarded or the goal-posts are constantly moved.
  • Pay, Rewards and Benefits.

So, during your interview, consider why the candidate is looking to move company, this could play to your advantage. To help stand out as a business, try to incorporate a discussion about how you intend to meet their needs. Rather than focussing on the company’s benefits, focus on their independent career goals.

If the interviewing process is evolving nicely, and they are keen to discover more about the company. Why not introduce them to your team? This would derive from a negative team dynamic being demonstrated, further implying you are a transparent and positive work environment. Your team will also be able to participate in a one to one interaction, allowing independent feedback to be formed.

After Interview

You want to create an approachable persona as a hiring manager, walk the candidate out to engage in a friendly chat. Rather than letting them see themselves out you are able to control what the interviewee sees and hears.

  • Give them a response date! If the candidate doesn’t get a timely response, they may lose interest in the role all together.
  • Provide constructive feedback! Even if it is a no, they may want to know why.
  • Presenting with an honest interview will help the candidate make their decision.

Although it isn't guaranteed - the above steps could help massively with your interview process and making yourself seem like an attractive employer/
