As a Mill Turner, the responsibility and tasks are selecting the cutting tools for machining operations using CNC or conventional lathes as well as mounting and dismounting work pieces on and from the lathe. Some more responsibilities are performing roughing and finishing operations, checking finished pieces to ensure compliance with technical drawings also carrying out maintenance of turning lathe and tools lastly cleaning lathe and work area. 

A Mill Turner should have the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, knowledge of mechanical maintenance practices and procedures for machine tools, strong manual skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision and to follow instructions, if you have all of these requirements a Mill Turner could be the job for you. 

The role of a Mill Turner can progress through many steps such as the apprenticeship can lead to working without any supervision, for an experienced lathe machinist has an opportunity to progress to a shift supervisor or department supervisor and eventually rise to become a production manager. Another option is to study electromechanical maintenance and become a maintenance technician for turning lathes, mills, and other machine tools, this career could lead to a role as a maintenance manager. 

Usually, the working hours for a Mill Turner would be full-time or a 2-3 shift pattern including nights, weekends, and public holidays. Salaries are between £27.300-37,050 per annum depending on experience.
