Which Engineering Job Offer Should You Take?

29-03-2022
Job seeker advice

When proceeding with job hunting independently it can be stressful, and you may apply for multiple engineering job roles. It is likely that if you have applied through a recruiter they may also apply for a variety of engineering jobs on your behalf (with your permission, of course). Multiple applications may result in multiple job offers and a great opportunity is just over the horizon! However, this can bring its own stress.

Which job will provide you with the most happiness or help you progress in your career?

Although there are little to no guarantees, we will help you break down every offer to help you select the best offer to meet your needs.

Give yourself time to think.

This decision will shape your future, consider extra time before accepting the first offer you receive. This is perfectly normal to do, giving yourself time will help you identify your priorities and alleviate some pressure you may feel. Sincerely thank the employer for the opportunity and tell them you would like to consult with your family before accepting. Justify that by a specific date you will get back to them in regards to the offer, avoid extending this over 5 working days.

Determine the Pros and Cons

Identifying the pros and cons will ultimately give you all the benefits and negatives of each role, this could also help you categorise which demands are more important, if any criteria is essential. Consider the role, the employer, your responsibilities, the pay, and the travel distance. If you are looking for a role that offers progression, consider taking the role that is in a large corporation as progression opportunities may be more common rather than a smaller company. Evaluate what things you may have to sacrifice when working certain roles.

Think Long Term

The end goal is to find your dream engineering role, not a job that is temporarily. Job searching can be a long draining process, you want to avoid doing it again in the near future. Think long term when making your decisions, your career goals should be a key characteristic when accepting a new role, will this new role support your goals?

The engineering sector is likely to develop, depending on what stage you may be at in life, consider what policies will support you. Whether that is maternity / paternity leave or a pension scheme for when you retire. It may seem so far into the future, but these aren’t harmful factors to consider.

Avoid focusing on your past decisions!

In order to be successful in your new role, you need to concentrate on the job at hand. You should be excited to start your new role, if you’ve taken time to evaluate your options its likely you are going to be making the right choice.
